| Subject: 1988 Sauber-Mercedes C9 Thu Jan 02 2014, 05:43 | |
| A development of the Sauber Racing C8 which used the Mercedes twin turbo 5 litre V8 engine. The C8 entered in the 1985 Le Mans Group C category, during the 1986 World Sports-Prototype Championship the C8 car finished 9th on it's debut at Monza, it claimed it's first win at the Nurburgring {which was the 7th race of the season}, for 1987 the Sauber Racing C9 was entered but the car did not achieve the expected results. In 1988 Mercedes made the official announcement of their full return to motorsports and the name was changed from Sauber Racing to Team Sauber Mercedes, with it's distinct Dark Blue body and AEG sponsorship, winning the opening round at Jerez, followed by wins in the 6th, 8th and 9th races and a 1 - 2 finish at the 11th race, the C9 proved itself a contender for the championship, with 5 wins from 11 starts and 2nd overall for the season. 1989 saw the car painted silver, winning 7 out of 8 races to claim both the Drivers' and Constructors' championships. The model I have here is the 1988 livery, which raced at Sandown International in the Australian round of the Sports-Prototype Championship.
